A bold vision for Canberra's future is taking shape, and it's all about revitalizing the city's railway precinct and station. With a $2.8 million federal injection, the project is set to transform an area into a thriving hub, but it's not without its challenges and controversies.
Local MPs David Smith and Andrew Leigh, along with Federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King and Chief Minister Andrew Barr, gathered at Canberra Railway Station to announce this exciting development. The East Lake Railway Precinct, slated for renewal, aims to accommodate 5000 new dwellings and create a vibrant urban space.
But here's where it gets controversial: the current NSW-owned railway station is deemed unworthy of the national capital's status. Chief Minister Barr believes it's time for a renewal, and he's not alone. The federal government's $150 million Urban Precincts and Partnerships Program (uPPP) is backing this vision, building on the Barr Government's initial $3 million investment.
The plan includes new multi-unit housing and businesses, supporting over a thousand jobs across various industries. Community and cultural facilities are also in the works for the former landfill area. However, a significant plan amendment still needs approval from the Legislative Assembly.
Chief Minister Barr is confident that the market will determine the housing mix, but he emphasizes the need for diversity. He expects a blend of public, community, and build-to-rent housing, along with accommodations for key workers.
The Railway Precinct, as outlined in the East Lake Place Plan, will feature a mix of commercial, residential, and public buildings, mostly ranging from four to six storeys, with strategic eight-storey marker developments. Construction of housing and a new station is set to occur simultaneously, creating a multi-modal transport hub.
And this is the part most people miss: the potential for a truly integrated transport system, with rapid buses and trains coming together. It's an ambitious project, and the NSW Government acknowledges the need for improvement. With the Woodlands and Wetlands Trust, the Canberra Institute of Technology, and developers on board, the future looks bright for this urban renewal initiative.
