CHARITABLE AND BOARD.

The Charitable Aid Board met yesterday. Present—Messrs H. FriedJander (chairman), J. Dobson, S. Harris, W. McMillan, W. H. Cooper, W. E. Samuels. F. Horrcll, G. Scott W. Radcliffc, C. J. Harper, J. Wolfe, Mesdomes Wells, Black and Henderson. The Rev. Father Le Menant de ChosnaLs wrote, stating that- the Catholio institutions would bo willing to take charge of the Catholio children under the Board, at the rate paid for boarding out. The letter also asked that the names and addresses of all Catholio children under the Board be supplied. The Board declined to consider tho first propasal, and acceded to the second. The Now Brighton Council wrote, expressing" an opinion that the issue of the lists quarterly or half-yearly would d_» "miflSci*G_it " The letter was received, Mr Samuels suggesting that no lists be sent to New Bris£hton, as they'objected. The Town Clerk of Lyttelton forwarded a resolution passed at a publio meeting with reference to the dispensing with the services of the medical officer at the Port. The letter was received. The chairman said that he had instructed the secretary, whenever medical aid in Lyttelton was required, to refer tho applicant to Dr. Newel 1. The Institutions Committee reported that the expenditure on tho maintenance of the Old Men's Homo, Ashburton, during the 6ix years ended 31st March, 1905, amounted to £9719 Gs 4d, being an average of £1619 17s 4d per annum, or £31 3s per week, whioh, divided by tho average number of inmates resident for tho whole period (59.94), amounted to 10s 4d per head per week. These figures did not, of course, take into account the £8090 spent in establishing the new institution and. making " Tuorangi" one of the best Homes of its kind in New Zealand or elsewhere. The figures for the Queen's Jubilee Memorial Home, Woolston, for the, same period, showed an average expenditure of 10a lid per head per week for 63.38 inmates throughout that time. The Tuarangi Committeo reported that the gas-heating system at the Homo was now in operation, with satisfactory results. The committee recommended that coal gas he used for lighting, a gas engine procured for pumping, and appliances obtained for heating water for the baths. The committee also recommended that tlie by-laws relating to the Home be revised, end adapted to present conditions, and'asked to be empowered to give effect to the above recommendations. After some discussion tho report was adopted. ' / , ' The Institutions. Committee. recommended that Mr C, E. Otloy's tender be accepted for tho construction of a septic, tank at the Memorial Home. Authority l was asked to, erect one or more 400 gallon tanks at th© Home, to. increase the water .increased water supply at the Orphanage •was also neoessary, and its cost from the Corporation waterworks was quoted, at Ss: per! 1000 gallons. The'.Lyttelton Borough Council had notified tho conditions an to the right-of-way through the old Orphanage property, -the" survey of which: was completed. The nurse at the Memorial Home had resigned, in order to take up work at .the Christchurch hospital. A successor had been engaged, subject to the: Boards approval. The committee recommended the acceptance of Mr C: E. Otley's tender for, repairs and additions,to the Female, , • ?^'X-,yXX7 i 7X:< Thereport was adopted; v .
