VALLEY CITY, ND (NewsDakota.com) — An online student art exhibit recognizes a Valley City seventh-grader for his artwork.

Valley City Jr./Sr. High school student Ashtynn Wieser (Grade 7) is Artsonia’s Artist of the Week. It received over 800 votes on Artsonia.com, an online collection of student art portfolios. Her teacher, Stephani Krueger, says shifting to the artistic philosophy of Teaching Artist Behavior (TAB) and empowering students to have more voice and choice in their artistic journey has made a such a difference in the artistic creation of the students. The students’ passion for art is more flourishing than ever.

Wiser says he was happy and surprised that his work was selected. His confidence in his artistic creation has grown this year in art and has more ideas for future artwork which he is excited to share.

“I had no idea that a work of art would turn into something much bigger. I didn’t know if I was going to get enough votes to win,” he said.

On the importance of the arts in schools, Krueger said the integration of visual arts is essential for the development of all students from kindergarten through 12th grade. It’s a subject that not only teaches fine and gross motor skills, but also provides opportunities for social and emotional growth. She added: ‘The arts are all encompassing, we teach history, science, literacy etc. “The arts are such a benefit to everything else in the program.

Wieser’s win gives her school a $100 gift card from Blick Art Materials.
