Canterbury School is a remarkable place for ambitious young learners seeking to develop the deep self-awareness and broad global perspective necessary for a prosperous and fulfilling life. It’s hard not to acquire such traits by being part of a connected community that prides itself on living and learning in harmony – on a campus filled with excitement.
Throughout the year, laughter, cheers and discussion fill the air as students celebrate International T-Shirt Day by selling custom outfits and donating proceeds to Africa; use Juneteenth as a day to reflect on and recommit to their school’s values of fairness and justice; taking turns drawing henna art on each other during the spring carnival; belt “Don’t Stop Believing” in unison at the Jazz and Rock Music Festival; and try quail eggs together for the first time during International Week. This is what it means to be part of the Canterbury family.
Located in scenic New Milford, Connecticut – just 150 miles from Boston and 85 miles from New York City – Canterbury is a preparatory college, coeducational boarding and day school for students in grades 9-12. Here, an amazing community of faculty—who also serve as coaches, dorm parents, and counselors—work tirelessly to get to know the students well. Their commitment allows 320 learnersrepresenting 16 countries, to discover their full potential in and out of the classroom.
An educational experience like no other
Canterbury students can access a wide range of opportunities within a small, welcoming community – the very one that fosters academic rigor, athletic development, artistic enrichment and spiritual growth.
A set of Five values – Honesty, respect, compassion, spirituality and self-reliance – inspires everything the Canterbury community does. Woven into all aspects of learning and living here, these values are essential to the overall experience of personal growth that truly sets an education in Canterbury apart.
“As the best small boarding school, Canterbury invites you to participate in the fullest version of a high school experience as students, athletes, artists, community members and servant leaders,” says Rachel Stone School Principal. “As a Saint, you will evolve, contribute and lead in transformational ways. You will learn that saints show up for saints. And you will call our hill your home.
As soon as they arrive on campus, students are invited to participate in the school community and the world around them. They begin by exploiting the Love Center for Faith, Service and Justice, where they explore community service, campus ministry, spirituality, social justice, and leadership programs. The center hosts many activities, retreats, discussion groups and prayerful meditation throughout the day. Students will have the opportunity to ask important questions, reflect on conversations in their community, and make a difference.
Real change can only take flight with the right intellectual tools, which is why The Canterbury Program is rigorous and dynamic – with a wide selection of offers to choose from as well as more than 50 Advanced Placement (AP) and Honors courses. In addition to this, Canterbury offers students the unique chance to take Syracuse University Project Advanced Courses for recognized college credit at 80% of colleges and universities in the United States.
At Canterbury, the close relationship between teacher and students forms the foundation of their academic program. With a student-faculty ratio of 6:1, the small class allows each student to benefit from individual attention and receive personalized support. A comprehensive leadership training program, focused on the value of collaboration, is combined with the small-classroom learning experience to nurture future leaders with a desire to serve others and improve the world. They not only live and learn, but also lead.
Whether as team captain, overseer, sexton, club founder, or community service participant, they learn the best form of leadership: uplifting those around them. They pursue a type of collaborative leadership, guided by values and a desire to improve the world.
“Our students will play a meaningful and responsible role in our community; between classmates, teammates and dorm mates in particular; and in all the spaces in between,” Stone shares. “Your child has unlimited opportunities to develop as a leader.”
A solid foundation for future success
Throughout their schooling, Canterbury students learn the skills they need to succeed in college and beyond. These include critical thinking, problem solving, effective communication, and a strong foundation in digital literacy. Focused on enabling students to find their own voice, the school presents concepts from different perspectives to allow students to develop their ideas while engaging in meaningful discussions with their peers.
The Digital Communication, Design and Innovation Program is a great example. It is designed to link computer programming, digital media, engineering, and visual arts into a single academic department. This unique program emphasizes innovation and the design thinking process that prepares students to function as developers and managers of applications and digital content, with an emphasis on the development, use and management of computing and communication technologies. Courses cover a variety of topics, including teaching security, politics, programming, and robotics, as well as the design and development of digital animation, photography, audio, and video. the video.
Most of this magic happens at Steer Center, a 22,000 square foot building that houses highly flexible classrooms, innovation and design and digital media labs, a welcoming student center – the Commons – and a cafe. These spaces inspire creative learning, weaving together elements of design, fabrication and ideation in areas spanning the humanities, arts and sciences.
At this creative hub, like everywhere else on its 150-acre campus, the possibilities are limitless for Canterbury students. To find out more about how Canterbury School provides the best small boarding school experience, click here.
