Just two weeks ago, Prince William and Kate dazzled the red carpet at a star-studded premiere to celebrate fictional hero James Bond. And now the royal couple are preparing to take center stage again, this time on a green carpet and with their own real-life mission to save the planet.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will both appear at the inaugural awards for his Earthshot Prize, to be held in North London on Sunday 17th October. alongside actresses Emma Watson and Emma Thompson, actor David Oyelowo and footballer Mo Salah, who will announce the five winners. The evening’s hosts will be British presenters Dermot O’Leary and Clara Amfo.

The prize aims to find innovative and achievable solutions over a decade to the world’s greatest environmental challenges. It was started by Prince William who pledged to make the “maximum positive personal contribution” he could so he could “look my children in the eye and say that I have done my part”. Drawing inspiration from President John F. Kennedy’s Moonshot, the prince hopes to encourage optimism and action around repairing the planet. In a documentary series accompanying the Prize, William says: “Our planet is now in crisis. Its delicately balanced systems become more and more unstable from year to year. So, for the sake of future generations, let’s act now.

This year’s five winners will each receive £ 1million to develop their innovation. They were chosen from a shortlist of 15 finalists from around the world, all of whose environmental solutions were highlighted in Earthshot’s companion documentary series, which can be viewed internationally on Discovery Plus. Next week’s awards ceremony will take place at the entertainment venue Alexandra Palace and will air in the UK on BBC One and globally on Discovery’s Facebook page.

“The event will be a celebration of the natural world, focused on transforming the current pessimism surrounding environmental issues into optimism by celebrating the people and places that are driving change – the earliest finalists and recipients of the Earthshot Award. It will be a truly unique broadcast event, ”Kensington Palace said in a statement.

The ceremony will include performances by Ed Sheeran, Coldplay, KSI and Yemi Alade, and Shawn Mendes. Kensington Palace said today that Coldplay’s performance, which will take place outside Alexandra Palace, will use power supplied by 60 riders.

The five categories of the Earthshot Prize are: Protect and Restore Nature; Purify our air; Revive our oceans; Building a world without waste; and Let’s fix our climate. There will be one winner for each category each year until 2030, showcasing 50 solutions to help address the challenges of climate change.
