The Great Smokies Health Foundation received 42 applications in the 2022 Community Grants cycle, totaling nearly $205,000 in funding requests – more than the Foundation has ever received in a previous year.

The Board of Directors met on Friday, August 12 to conduct the final review and vote on this year’s winners. The 30 community grants that have been approved represent an extraordinary range of activities and services focused on health, wellness and prevention initiatives in Graham, Jackson, Macon and Swain counties.

The Great Smokies Health Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, was established in August 2014 as a legacy organization of the West Care Health System (Harris Regional Hospital and Swain County Hospital) with proceeds of their sale to Duke Life Point, a for-profit entity.

The mission of the Great Smokies Health Foundation is to improve the health of residents of Jackson, Swain, Macon and Graham counties through investment and collaboration focused on health, wellness and prevention. The Foundation is governed by a local board made up of representatives of the communities served.

Organizations seeking funding from the Great Smokies Health Foundation must be either a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency with a current charitable solicitation license issued by the North Carolina Secretary of State, or a city, county or other government agency.
